Sedation Dentistry

Sedation Dentistry

If you’re afraid of the dentist, you’re one of 35 million Americans who have some level of anxiety when it comes to going to the dentist. However, these fears can cause you to neglect your oral health, and that is absolutely unnecessary. We have a team of specialists and anesthesiologists who are committed to making your dental visits and procedures absolutely painless and comfortably. Our sedation dentistry patients no longer fear the dentist and are able to maintain their oral health and smile’s beauty with no pain and no anxiety.

What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry utilizes sedatives and state-of-the-art equipment to minimize discomfort during dental treatment. Any procedure from cleanings to full mouth reconstructions can be made absolutely painless and comfortable using this comprehensive approach to dentistry. We offer three different types of sedation dentistry that are appropriate for a variety of procedures, from the most complicated surgeries to simple treatments.

IV Sedation in Dentistry

IV, or intravenous, sedation provides analgesia through an intravenous injection of a sedative. After the injection, the patient feels drowsy and does not feel painful stimuli that the procedure or surgery generates. After the procedure is complete and the sedation wears off, the patient does not have any negative recollection of the procedure and is well-rested, as well as in considerably better dental health. IV sedation dentistry is a great solution that can give the patient absolute comfort during treatment, and eliminates pain and anxiety much more effectively than pill or gas sedation does. Although less than one percent of California dentists have a license to perform this type of sedation, our team is highly skilled and experienced in this technique and we have a proven track record of safe and successful IV sedation that spans over twenty years.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation in Dentistry

Another more widespread type of sedation, inhalation or nitrous oxide sedation, is also provided in our offices for less severe circumstances. During this technique, the patient breathes in nitrous oxide (N2O) and oxygen through a nasal mask, which creates a euphoric effect and the patient becomes relaxed and does not feel pain.

Oral Sedation in Dentistry

The most easily administered and efficient sedation technique is oral sedation, in which the patient takes a sedative pill orally the night before the appointment and/or several hours before the appointment. When the dental visit begins, the patient is already relaxed and free of anxiety, and will remain so throughout the procedure. However, because the sedation takes effect before the actual appointment, the patient should be driven by someone else to the office
